Objective 3.2 in the Draft National Nanotechnology Initiative Strategic Plan calls for the government to "Initiate outreach and informal education programs and publish related information to foster a student population, workforce, and public who are well informed about the opportunities in nanotechnology-related industries and the potential impacts of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) and ethical, legal, and societal implications (ELSI) of nanotechnology." The draft plan is currently online for public comment until November 30 and can be accessed from http://strategy.nano.gov/blog/post/331. The plan also calls for signature research initiatives that cut across multiple governmental agencies to address significant needs and opportunities. The three initial signature initiatives identified are: Nanoelectronics for 2020 and Beyond; Sustainable Nanomanufacturing – Creating the Industries of the Future; and Nanotechnology for Solar Energy Collection and Conversion. The plans objectives and signature initiatives are seen as being the focus of the NNI for at least the next three years, with additional signature initiatives coming online in future years. New research efforts will likely be generated to focus on these initiatives and may provide both content and future partners for the NISE Net.
