Combined Zoom Poster: Everything Is Made of Atoms (Butterfly, Bloodstream, Computer Chip)

This poster aligns zooms into three familiar objects - a human heart, a butterfly's wing, and a laptop computer. Using the conventions of visual perspective the image travels in one continuous “landscape” from the human scale at the top to the atomic scale in the foreground. As the scale gets smaller and smaller, these disparate objects resolve to individual atoms, highlighting the concept that everything is made of atoms.

This illustration won the 2008 Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge from NSF and Science magazine!

Scientific Image - Platinum Atoms

Platinum atoms are arranged in closely packed hexagonal layers. A top view of this hexagonal structure is shown in this scanning tunneling microscope image.

Platinum has applications in automotive engineering, chemical processing, jewelry, electronics, and wires and electrical contacts for use in corrosive or high-voltage environments. Platinum is also a component in magnetic coatings for high-density hard disc drives and new varieties of optical storage systems.

• SIZE: The size of a platinum atom is around 0.3 nm.

Nanotube Models

“Nanotube Models” is a facilitated tabletop program aimed at educating the public about the properties and applications of carbon nanotubes. Visitors will be able to use Molecular Visions model kits to build carbon nanotubes. The models can be started by museum staff and added onto by visitors, or pre-built to be used as a display. The models can also be accompanied by other NISE Net programs that focus on carbon nanotubes to increase the engagement and enhance the models.

Molecularium Molecules to the Max

The Molecularium® Project at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has developed educational cartoon films that explore the world of atoms and molecules. The videos are aimed at young people, families, and school groups. Additional resources include images and an educator's guide.
