"Exploring Materials - Polarizers" is a hands-on activity in which visitors use two polarizing sheets and overlapping layers of transparent tape to see how polarizers affect light. They learn that researchers are using nanotechnology to improve existing materials, in this case polarizing filters.
This activity—in which students test a local water supply—is designed to be used as an extension to classroom activities related to treating foul water for consumption. This activity should be done after students have been introduced to the concept of nanoscale and before Lesson 2 - Water Filtration and Nanoparticles lab. Students should have a good grasp of how to convert the size of objects to the nanometer scale.
"Exploring Size - Ball Sorter" is a hands-on activity in which visitors use sieves with different-sized holes, to sort balls by size. They learn that researchers are developing new technologies that can sort nano-sized things, including filters with nano-sized holes.
"NanoSense Activities" has 4 curriculum units to help high school teachers and students understand nanoscale science. Each unit includes background materials, directions and instructional materials.
