Rebecca Smith, PhD, is Co-Director of the UCSF Science & Health Education Partnership, where together with a phenomenal team of Academic Coordinators, she develops and implements programs that partner UCSF scientist volunteers with San Francisco public school teachers to support high quality science education for the students in San Francisco. Dr. Smith has been on the staff of SEP since 2000. She is currently Program Director and/or Principal Investigator on grants from the Genentech Foundation, the California Science Project, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation. Dr. Smith has taught doctoral and post-doctoral students and has extensive experience in leading professional development for teachers. She co-developed and co-teaches two innovative courses that use active, inquiry-based teaching techniques to help elementary and middle school teachers understand key concepts in biology and chemistry. She currently serves as a Steering Committee member of UCSF’s Preparing Future Faculty initiative and is on the Advisory Board for Virginia Tech’s Partnership for Research and Education in Plants (PREP). Prior to joining SEP, Rebecca completed her doctoral studies in Biochemistry at UCSF where she studied gene repression in S. cerevisiae in the laboratory of Alexander (Sandy) Johnson. During graduate school, Rebecca volunteered extensively in SEP’s programs.
