NanoDays Report: Program - NISE Kit, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry

About the NanoDays event(s)

Description:

On the museum floor: daily nano demonstrations throughout NanoDays, a loaned tabletop SEM that visitors could operate, and prototype nanotechnology exhibits on nanomedicine and intro to nano.

Special events in Portland: Lecture on nanotechnology and solar energy on March 18 (a bit before NanoDays); Nanotechnology Science Pub on March 31; Nanotechnology and Alternative Energy Forum on April 2; and three Nano and Alternative Energy Forums in Eastern Oregon during April 7-9.

Type of Events:

Program - NISE Kit

What worked well with NanoDays:

Paper buckyballs and "This is made of atoms" stickers as prizes were very popular.

The Science Pub on nanotechnology was very popular with about 140 people in attendance, and about 100 having to be turned away because there was no space. (Science Pub is a popular series of lectures held in a local brewery.)

The exhibits were placed in well-traveled areas of the museum and were used frequently by visitors.

What wasn't as successful:

Getting attendees at the nano forums was difficult.

What would be done differently next year:

Have more signage.

Changes made to what NISE provided for NanoDays to better fit the institution:

We had to redesign the sign to put it up in our lobby.

What the NISE network could have done to make NanoDays more of a success:

Perhaps a national press release?
