NISE Network Media production has focused on building the capacity of the field to locate, produce, and share nanoscale informal science educational media.

Explorations in the first phase of work (2006-07) include the following:

  • Researching existing media resources and organizing them into a professional "nano media finder" resource website at www.nanomediafinder.net
  • Developing partnerships for media-based educational outreach with NOVA, Dragonfly TV, and WBUR.
  • Developing a set of standards for the construction of a multimedia authoring and distribution system that could serve kiosks in museums and other public places via the Web.
  • Experimenting with the development of short films using fun approaches to understanding the scale of nano and then setting up a "Viewer's Choice" interactive booth on the floor of the Museum and on YouTube.
  • Filming and post-production of documentary material, flash-based animations, and interactives exploring the work of several leaders in the field of cancer nanomedicine.
  • Partnering with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry to build a media-rich exhibit on nanomedicine.
  • Partnering with a team at the Maryland Science Center to explore regional production of nanomedicine research stories.
  • Development of a prototype updateable multimedia kiosk on cancer nanomedicine to be offered to museums with human body and medicine exhibits.
  • Producion of a short film on Don Eigler, the Scanning Tunneling Microscope, and research into quantum computing.
  • Co-sponsorship of a materials science and nanotech short film festival with the Materials Research Society.
  • Production of two short radio documentaries on nano research aired on WBUR Boston and one one-hour nationally broadcast radio call-in show on issues in regulating nanotech.
