Each year, MRS holds two international meetings, one in Boston in the fall and the other in San Francisco in the spring. The NISE Net participates in these meetings in a variety of ways, holding workshops, professional development sessions, outreach activities, and bringing new scientists into the network.

Discover an MRS Community of Science Education and Outreach
The Materials Research Society is playing a major role in bringing the education, research and industrial communities together at the 2014 MRS Spring Meeting. Join us for exciting hands-on activities, demonstrations, information areas and seminars to engage future materials scientists and engineers.  Find out how you can participate and be a part of the excitement as we bring the science of materials to the general public.

In this session, communications expert Tim Miller will discuss some of the principles of creating newsworthy stories from research discoveries. Participants will gain hands-on experience at turning a research paper into a newspaper article or television story and had the opportunity to practice giving a live media interview.

Learn the fundamentals of sharing science as communications expert Tim Miller explains how to choose the very best tools for communicating effectively and reveals some of the tips and tricks that can help you take your scientific presentations to the next level.

Interested in science writing?
Learn the techniques required to take any story—a news story, journalistic article, blog entry or profile of a scientist—to the next level.  

A free, one-day writing workshop will be held on Monday, April 21, in parallel with the 2014 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco. You do not need to be registered for the Spring Meeting to attend the Science Writing Workshop. The workshop is limited to 15 participants. Applications are accepted until (5 p.m. ET) March 20, 2014. Note: Participants will receive a writing assignment and reading material prior to the workshop.

  • Tutorial Safety First—Enhancing Safety in Academic Research Laboratories

    This is a valuable session for students and faculty involved in laboratory research at academic institutions of any size.  The tutorial will include presentations on the industrial perspective on safety from Dow and other industry personnel, government regulations and oversight and the experiences of university faculty and researchers, breakout sessions on specific safety issues, hands-on demonstrations and a panel discussion.
