Online Workshop: Deepening and Extending Family Engagement and Learning Through Interactive Exhibits and Facilitated Hands-on Activities (Recorded)

The NISE Network runs a series of free online workshops to increase the number of professional development opportunities available to our partners, and create more channels for partners to share their work and learn from each other directly.

Deepening and Extending Family Engagement and Learning Through Interactive Exhibits and Facilitated Hands-on Activities

Tuesday, October 23, 2018

11am - 12pm Pacific / 2pm - 3pm  Eastern

Join members of the REVEAL and ChemAttitudes projects for an online discussion of facilitation strategies you can employ with your visitors.

The REVEAL (Researching the Value of Educator Actions on Learning) professional development program helps facilitators to become more reflective in their practice and responsive to the complex dynamics that families bring to our institutions. We’ll take a dip into understanding the family context; supporting intergenerational communication; encouraging exploration and inquiry; negotiating family and facilitator goals; and recognizing expectations and shared understandings.

The NISE Network's ChemAttitudes project developed informal educational activities that can be used to stimulate interest, a sense of relevance, and feelings of self-efficacy about chemistry among public audiences. We’ll share some of the Explore Science: Let’s Do Chemistry kit (digital kit available September 2018) activities showcasing particular facilitation techniques you can employ with visitors and findings from research connected with the ChemAttitudes project that indicate specific strategies which may affect visitors’ interest, relevance, and self-efficacy in the topic of chemistry. Online resources, including professional development materials, will be shared throughout the workshop so you can access and use these materials with you staff.
