David R. Brown is a Professor of Chemistry at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA but is currently on leave, serving as a Program Director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, VA. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and undertook postdoctoral research in Biophysics at UC San Diego.

His professional interests include curriculum development, directing undergraduate research, STEM community outreach (with a particular emphasis on young people from under-served communities) and capacity-building to identify and encourage talented individuals to contribute to the solutions of the grand challenges facing society. One of his endeavors that leverages multiple interests is Project iLASER, which an article in Chemical & Engineering News reported:

In 2007 Brown received the Stanley C. Israel Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences from the Western Region of the American Chemical Society and was a 2012 recipient of the Award for Incorporating Sustainability into Chemistry Education from the American Chemical Society Committee on Environmental Improvement.
