All 2017 Explore Science: Earth & Space toolkit recipients are invited to register for a free four-week online workshop to prepare educators to present toolkit activities to public audiences. Through online forum discussions, live interactive video conferences with guest scientists, short readings, recorded videos, and engaging homework assignments, you will deepen your knowledge of Earth and space science topics, and gain confidence with strategies for engaging your museum visitors with these topics. You’ll also develop a concrete plan for implementing the toolkit activities, tailored specifically to your own institution and the community you serve. While the toolkit already includes everything facilitators will need to present the activities, this optional intensive workshop experience will provide educators with more in-depth training, exclusive access to guest scientists, and connections with colleagues at other museums who are also implementing the toolkit activities at their institutions.

This workshop is presented by the National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE Net) in partnership with the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), and is offered exclusively to the recipients of the 2017 Explore Science: Earth & Space toolkit. It is designed for museum educators and other staff who regularly engage with public visitors, as well as those who train staff and volunteers. The workshop is appropriate for participants with a range of background knowledge and experience.

Participants will gain the following through participation in the workshop:

  • Content knowledge in space and Earth science, directly related to the nine activities in the Explore Science: Earth & Space toolkit
  • Strategies for engaging the public in the topics covered in the toolkit
  • Opportunities for rich discussions with 40-45 other informal science educators also participating in the workshop, both through live video conferencing and through online forum discussions
  • Access to the expertise of guest scientists from NASA and other institutions
  • Certificate of completion from NISE Net (pending completion of minimum requirements)

Eligibility

To participate in this workshop, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Your organization has been awarded the 2017 Explore Science: Earth & Space toolkit and the workshop participant has access to the physical materials in the toolkit.
  • You regularly engage with public museum / science center visitors, or train other staff and volunteers to do so. We welcome and encourage multiple participants from the same institution.
  • You can commit to spending approximately four hours per week on tasks related to the workshop.
